Clinton and Trump Have Competition For November

The Presidential Race just became a little more crowded afters the Libertarian Party announced its Presidential and vice-president candidates this weekend. Sunday, the country’s third largest political party announced former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson will run for president in November and former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld will be his vice-president running mate.

It could be an uphill battle for Johnson as the Libertarian Party has been considered a fringe party in the U.S.; last election the party garnered less than 1% of the popular vote. However this election is setting up to be a much different environment because both Democrats and Republicans have extremely  high disapproval ratings. There is some talk that a third party candidate could have some sway. A recent Washington Post-ABC News poll showed that Republican Candidate Donald Trump and Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton have the highest unfavorable ratings in the history of any presidential candidate. The poll showed that 46% strongly disapproved of Trump and 45% strongly disapproved of Clinton. According to a Fox News earlier this month, Johnson had 10% national support; in the same survey Trump had 42% support and Clinton was at 39%. “Another poll showing one of our presidential candidates in double digits affirms the likelihood that the Libertarian Party will have a sizable influence in the 2016 election,” said Nicholas Sarwark, Chair of the Libertarian National Committee in a statement following the survey. With such a tight race between Trump and Clinton can a dark horse slip the middle? I guess we will see in November
